2011 Fnords: Judges, nominations, sponsors
Most of you are familiar with the Fnords. Some of you are not. The Fnords are the MCS's annual awards ceremony to celebrate contributors to Micras-based micronationalism. Through the month of December, micronationalists like yourself nominate candidates. Over Christmas vacation, a crack team of judges specially selected to make sure everyone is equally certain the awards are biased against themselves votes on the nominations. On January 8th, Emperor Norton Day, we announce the year's winners. When people win an award too many times in a row, the award gets named after them and they get disqualified to give someone else a chance. Other times I name them on a whim, or to honor people associated with the award in some way.
The traditional categories are below. Some categories may not have any deserving nominees, in which case better to throw them out than nominate random undeserving people.
Liam conToketi Award for Most Promising New Micronationalist
Erik Mortis Award for Leadership
Iain Jacobson Award for Journalism
Andreas the Wise Award for Economics
Josh Coales Award for Best New Idea
Charles Beard Award for Conflict Resoltion
Jeremy Bellamy Award for Literature
Bill Dusch Award for Cultural Development
Rebecca Panks Award for the Graphic Artz
Liam Sinclair Award for Micronational History(previously RIMA Award, but I have no evidence RIMA still exists. Liam, contact me if you're here)
Shane Odlum Award for Overall Achievement
There is also one award, "Most Promising New Micronation", awarded to a country instead of an individual.
I am now accepting nominations for all of these awards. Feel free to nominate yourself. Feel free to nominate as many people for as many awards as you want. It's a very liberal nomination process. There are only three rules. One, only countries and individuals on Micras can be nominated. Two, only nominate people for things they did between December 1 2010 and December 1 2011 or so. Finally, don't nominate anyone for an award named after themselves. It would also be nice if we could avoid giving the Odlum again to recent winners like Nate and Andreas.
I am also looking for judges; we usually have about five. Ideal judges would be good at making unbiased decisions, not all from the same country or clique of countries, and broadly familiar with a wide spectrum of Micras and its goings-on. I would be very interested in having at least one judge from our new MicroWiki countries this year. Judges may not vote for themselves; if they are a nominee in any category they can either vote against themselves or abstain.
Finally, I'm looking for sponsors. Sponsors should be willing to pay micronational currency, preferably SCUE-linked, in exchange for a short plug during the awards announcement post, and possibly a branding as the "2011 [Name of Company] Fnord Awards". Depending on the amount of money collected, I might distribute it among all winners, distribute it among winners of a few big-name awards, just give it all to the Odlum Award winner, or give it to the judges as a "salary".
For reference: 2010 Fnords, 2009 Fnords. If you want results before 2009, you'll have to search the archives yourself.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Scott meant the period between December 2010 and December 2011
I'd like to put my name forward for judging if that's alright, and I also have the following nomination:
Best New Idea: Scott for Archipelago
I wish I had more nominations but either nobody/no nation really stands-out from the rest from the past year, or I'm not savvy enough about goings-on elsewhere that could constitute a nomination

Don't like to do this but:
Bill Dusch Award for Cultural Development: Myself, for work on both the FMF Statistics Office and the first Rugby League World Cup.

We might want to consider a Technical Work award one of these years year. If we had that category this year I'd nominate Andreas for his work on the SCX and other economy-related tools and games.
Josh Coales Award for Best New Idea

Sorry, that was either a typo or a bad copy paste job. I meant between Dec 1 2010 and Dec 1 2011.What's wrong with stuff that happened in 2011? This is the 2011 FNORDs, not the 2010 edition.
I guess if everyone is overwhelmingly in favor of nominating Andreas for his own award I'll have to allow it.
I'm not sure Archipelago is Fnordworthy, since it's not on Micras.

The FNORD's were originally MNN-based, weren't they? It's only for convenience's sake that they were brought over here when MNN went down, as opposed to being based around Micrasian activities specificallyScott Alexander wrote:I'm not sure Archipelago is Fnordworthy, since it's not on Micras.

Unto Emperor Norton, the Fnord Lord of all Micras, a request:
LET DANIEL BE A JUDGE!
I was the winner of the 2006 Bill Dusch Award for Micronational Cultural Development for what I assume were achievements of the previous year (2005). Gods, I'm old

Re: 2011 Fnords: Judges, nominations, sponsors
Seeing as people have been nominating themselves, I feel less guilty about nominating myself for Literature for the write-up of mine and Queen Anika's wedding. Even though it's not that much/great, it is the largest backstory I've written which isn't a football report
Re: 2011 Fnords: Judges, nominations, sponsors
Well if self nomination's the name of the game I'd like to nominate myself for Literature as well, for the development of the Primer.

I'll judge.

Oh, wow, thank you.Scott Alexander wrote:Jeremy Bellamy Award for Literature: If we're allowing Archipelago, I nominate Harvey for The Diary of Preturnatural, the First Awake
Though, I have to say I wouldn't mind at all losing to Shyriath's Unsealing, so I'll nominate that myself for this category.
